What is Aqua Zumba???
Aqua Zumba® is perfect for those looking to make a splash by adding a low-impact, high-energy aquatic exercise to their fitness routine.
How It Works–Aqua Zumba® blends the Zumba® philosophy with water resistance, for one pool party you shouldn’t miss!
Benefits–There is less impact on your joints during an Aqua Zumba® class so you can really let loose. Water creates natural resistance, which means every step is more challenging and helps tone your muscles.
Information and hints for class (helpful but certainly not all encompassing):
—life guards are rare at most venues and participants must assume their own personal risk in the pool and never expect a life guard to be “on duty”. (Bloomsburg Town Pool does have life guards.)
–participants are encouraged to position themselves in water depth that is generally about chest height
—participants determine the intensity of their Aqua Zumba® workout by controlling their own ROM (range of motion), speed, and how much water they move with their hands, arms and legs. This allows participants with a wide range of fitness skills to participate in the same class
—participants should be in a bathing suit that is supportive and will allow one to “let loose” with their moves and maximize their workout. Water shoes are optional but certainly permissible. Remember a towel and sunscreen (for outdoor venues).
— participants need to remember they are in the water in an active fitness program with “swancing” (dancing/swim in pool) and their hair and or face may get splashed and wet
–Aqua Zumba® is sort of a “follow the leader” concept. Physical cues (hands and fingers, facial expressions, body movements) will be given from the pool deck by the instructor. There is a pattern to songs with verses, chorus, hooks, etc. and the choreography is in sync with those patterns. Understanding this will help with following along and mastering the choreography
–participants need to understand that they must monitor their own intensity while exercising and adjust their own movements to keep themselves in a safe zone.
–participants need to understand that they do need to stay hydrated even while working in the pool and can/should hydrate before/during/after Aqua Zumba®
–participants need to understand that they have the buoyancy of the water while exercising but the instructor does not. Also, pool decks where they instructor leads from are often wet and slippery. Therefore, some moves will be taught and cued with the instructor’s safety in mind using chair/stool or simplified moves.
—participants are cautioned when exiting the pool after a great water workout, their “land” legs may feel very heavy and take care with those first few steps.
—all are encouraged to have fun, sing, shout, laugh and enjoy themselves. Aqua Zumba® is the BEST pool party!!!!!
