This is an administrative and supervisory position directing and coordinating the Municipal Program of Public Safety for the Town of Bloomsburg in Columbia County (population 14,855 and home to Bloomsburg University, with over 10,000 students and staff). The Chief of Police is responsible to lead, direct, and coordinate all units within the department including 3 Sergeants, and 14 Full time Officers. General direction is received from the Mayor, to whom the Chief reports directly, and the Municipal governing body through policy direction and conference.
Candidates will have served at least 5 years in a supervisory/command position in a law enforcement agency. A minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree with a pertinent major course of study is desired. In addition, it is preferred that applicants have experience in managing a modern law enforcement agency and that they are graduates from an advanced training course such as the FBI National Academy, Northwestern University School of Police Staff and Command, the Southern Police Institute, or other recognized and equivalent law enforcement training. A combination of education, training, and experience will be considered.
The successful candidate will be a professional who possesses a demonstrated knowledge and proficiency in police department operations and practices. This also includes planning, budgeting, labor relations, current law enforcement technology, public administration, personnel administration and management and knowledge of the law. The ability to work cooperatively with elected officials, municipal administration, citizens and civic leaders is required.
The successful candidate must be currently certified under Pennsylvania Act 120 (53 Pa. C.SA. § 2161), or be eligible to receive certification within 120 days of employment. Salary is dependent upon experience and qualifications. A comprehensive medical examination, psychological examination and extensive background investigation will be required prior to appointment.
Residency within fifteen (15) miles of the police department is required within one year of appointment. Interested applicants should forward application, a cover letter and resume that includes positions held, education, experience, history of police responsibility and accomplishments.
